EL Wire Animal Masks for Halloween

If you’re looking for an easy, fun, and glowing Halloween costume this year, read on to learn how to make an animal mask with EL wire on a bike helmet. I was inspired by Tom Newsom’s Glownimals project over in the UK, which he showed off at Elephant and Castle Mini Maker Faire last summer.

Plain wire supports the glowing design and because the helmet straps securely to your head, you have a lot of freedom to design whatever character you want.

GEMMA Hoop Earrings – NeoPixel Ring Pendant

Bill of materials (for one pendant– double this for a pair of earrings):

  • Gemma M0 or Original Gemma
  • NeoPixel ring
  • tiny lipoly battery with charger
  • pendant hanger or ear wires/jump rings
  • stranded wire
  • clear thread
  • double stick tape
  • E6000 adhesive (if using glue-on pendant hanger)
  • soldering iron and solder
  • multimeter
  • scissors
  • wire strippers
  • pliers
  • flush snips
  • tweezers
  • helping third hand tool

Improve your visibility with style! Mod up this bike helmet with LED strip, a FLORA GPS, and find your way to the nearest Citi Bike station with ease. We used a Carrera foldable helmet, which has grooves between the protection, perfect for NeoPixel strip.
